Reading a floor plan before you buy

Five things to check on a plan before you look at a single rendering.

Reading a floor plan before you buy

Start with the walls you can’t move

Structural walls and the service core fix where kitchens and bathrooms can go. Ask which walls carry load before you imagine knocking anything through.

Then count the windows per room, not per apartment. A bedroom with one narrow window will feel smaller than its square metres.

Follow the route of a day

Walk the plan from the front door to the bed, the kitchen and the balcony. Good plans keep those routes short and never send you through a bedroom to reach the living room.
